5 Tips for Decorating with a Floating Shelf

A perfectly placed, tastefully decorated floating shelf can be the perfect accent to any room. They provide a clean, interesting look as well as functionality. Considering the average size of new single-family homes in the U.S. is 2,600 square feet, many consumers are looking for ways to fill up wall space. Decorating with a floating shelf (or many) can make any room appear more interesting.

Over/Under the TV

For those who Blu-ray players, cable boxes, and gaming systems, floating shelves act as a great storage option. Similarly, you can use the shelf to keep the remote and controllers in one place so you don’t have to look for it every time you sit down.

Laundry Room Organizer

We can’t overstate the functionality that a couple of floating shelves brings to a laundry room. Use them to store the detergent, stain fighter, and fabric softener right overhead where it’s needed and easily accessible.

Storage for Kids Toys

Putting toys away is better than stepping on them. Teach kids to keep their room tidy and take care of their stuff by designating floating shelves for specific items. Over time, the function of the shelf can change and grow as they do—trophies can replace toys, and so on.

Bathroom Hack

The bathroom never seems to have enough storage. Install a few floating shelves in the bathroom to store extra toilet paper and towels. As such, when guests are visiting, they won’t need to snoop around in order to find what they need.

Color Accent

If one color dominates your rooms, add a floating shelf with some decorative bowls, candles, or other decorative items. These colorful additions will add contrast to the room and make it pop. Take it a step further and paint the shelf and even bolder color to draw the eye.

When it comes to installing floating shelves, you’ll want to ensure that you have all the necessary tools. This includes a tape measure, stud finder, level, drill, hammer, screwdriver, and floating shelf brackets.
